Civil Engineering is considered as the mother of all engineering branches. The term ‘Civil’ itself
means ‘relating to people’. It is considered the second-oldest engineering discipline after military
engineering. Civil engineering is aprofessional engineering discipline that deals with the design,
construction, and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment, including works such
as roads, bridges, canals, dams, airports, sewerage systems, pipelines, and railways. By developing the
infrastructure for our society, civil engineers are basically giving shape to the history of a nation. Civil
engineering has played a vital role in increasing the health and quality of life, from developing better
water supplies, municipal sewer systems, waste water treatment plants, to the design of buildings to
protect us from natural hazards, to improved agriculture through water resource development and
rapid changes in transportation systems.
Civil Engineering has various specialisations, some of them being 1)Structural engineering
2)Construction engineering 3)Geotechnical engineering 4)Transportation Engineering
5)Environmental Engineering 6)Water Resource Engineering 7)Foundation Engineering 8)Hydraulic
Engineering 9)Coastal and Ocean Engineering 10)Forensic Engineering and 11)Urban Engineering.
About Civil Engineering Department, MESCE
Department of Civil Engineering was started in MESCE in the year 2007 with an intake of 40 for UG
(B.Tech) which was increased to 60 in 2009. The first batch passed out in 2011. It also admits
students in the third semester as lateral entry students as per the rules and regulations of AICTE. In
2012, a Post Graduate (M.Tech) course in ‘Construction Engineering and Management’ was started,
which has an intake of 18 students. Both the UG and PG courses are in great demand and all the
batches run full.
Well qualified and experienced faculty members and highly skilled lab assistants form the backbone
of the department. The department has well equipped and state-of-the-art laboratories which cater to
the needs of a civil engineering student. It has excellent LAN and Internet facilities.
Consultancy works and laboratory tests are undertaken for private institutions as well as public
departments like KPWD, CPWD, KWA, Indian Railway, Irrigation department, KSEB etc.
The department conducts different skill development courses under Additional Skill Acquisition
Programme (ASAP), Govt. Of Kerala and Pradhan Manthri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) under
MHRD and AICTE.
The department also conducts practical and project guidance for various courses under the Institution
of Civil Engineers (India), Delhi.
